Procurement: Buy the Ability to Exit Too

Procurement: Buy the Ability to Exit Too — Original analysis and practical exercises from Mustanef.

العربية — المادة المقابلة

An entry price can hide migration, training, updates and shutdown costs. Without an exit plan, replacement becomes difficult even when benefits fail to appear.

The decision to examine

Require usable exports, clear deletion and maintenance responsibilities, and evaluation before renewal. Owning data is not the same as being able to extract and reuse them.

Worked example

Two hypothetical bids cost 100 and 80 units. If the second adds 40 for review and migration, it becomes 120. State assumptions rather than declaring the lower headline price a winner.

From idea to practice

  1. Describe the problem as a need, not a product name.
  2. Specify evidence needed before a decision and who reviews it.
  3. Test a non-personal example and log failures as well as successes.
  4. State whether to continue, improve or stop and why.

Your exercise

List five lifecycle cost items and one clause explaining how work continues after shutdown.

Review rubric

A useful answer identifies a context, checkable evidence, a boundary and an owner for the next step. If it fits any organisation unchanged, add a detail specific to the case. This is a learning rubric, not automatic marking or official assessment.
