Training and operation resources depend on size, hardware, task and usage. A figure from one experiment cannot describe every AI system.
The decision to examine
Define the boundary: device or data centre, training or one request? Compare alternatives and usage volume, distinguishing estimates from measurement.
Worked example
A hypothetical organisation compares local search with generation for fixed links. Search may meet the need without generation; we need not claim unmeasured energy savings.
From idea to practice
- Describe the problem as a need, not a product name.
- Specify evidence needed before a decision and who reviews it.
- Test a non-personal example and log failures as well as successes.
- State whether to continue, improve or stop and why.
Your exercise
List three things needed before claiming greater sustainability and identify a measurement you can actually perform.
Review rubric
A useful answer identifies a context, checkable evidence, a boundary and an owner for the next step. If it fits any organisation unchanged, add a detail specific to the case. This is a learning rubric, not automatic marking or official assessment.
